Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence
Bosch BCAI - AI Con

AI CONFERENCE

The conference brings together leaders of AI in academic and corporate research under the motto “Corporate Research meets Academic Research”.

What is it about?

The Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence (BCAI) and the Cyber Valley research alliance organize the AI conference at the Bosch research campus in Renningen. It took place for the first time in November 2018 and will continue annually in the future. Under the motto "Corporate Research meets Academic Research", we offer leading researchers from science and industry a platform to discuss central questions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Our aim is to bring together leaders of AI in academic and corporate community to exchange ideas and foster discussions. At the same time, we want to identify opportunities and challenges in the use of AI technologies.

Review of the AI Conference 2018

One day, twelve presentations, over 250 experts from research, industry and science from all over the world: The AI conference 2018 took place for the first time on November 19, 2018 at the Bosch research campus in Renningen.

Internationally renowned scientists and industry representatives provided an insight into their AI work via exciting presentations.

Selected Bosch exhibits provided insights into current products based on the research results and showed that the transfer of science is already reality. Bosch SoundSee, for example, was on display: the AI unit – developed in cooperation with Astrobotics – will be used for autonomous acoustic monitoring of the international space station ISS and is set to launch at the beginning of 2019. Another example was the Indego robotic mower, which uses machine learning to better identify obstacles on the lawn.

Another highlight of the event were the poster sessions: 48 abstracts were selected for the AI conference 2018 from over a hundred high-quality submissions. One abstract stood out and was awarded the Best Poster Award by the jury: "Assessing Generative Models via Precision and Recall" by Mehdi S.M. Sajjadi, from the Max-Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, Max-Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, and Google Brain, together with Olivier Blachem, Mario Lucic, Olivier Bousquet and Sylvain Gelly, all from Google Brain.

The AI conference 2018 showed the importance of such platforms for the exchange between industry and research. In order to strengthen Germany as a research and business location and to take on a leading role in the field of AI, we will continue our efforts.

Announcement

To pave the way for future AI researchers, on November 19th, Bosch announced to be the main sponsor for the "Budeswettbewerb Künstliche Intelligenz", organized by the Max Planck Institute and the University of Tübingen. Also at the conference, the Bosch AI Young Research Award was announced.

Outlook for the AI conference 2019

The planning for the AI conference 2019 is already underway. The conference is expected to take place in late 2019. The concrete date and agenda will be soon determined and be published on this page. So stay tuned!

Remarks

Bosch BCAI - Director of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems

Bernhard Schölkopf

Director of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems

Quote:

“AI is a broad field and it is going to affect different parts of the world and different parts of the society. It is affecting basic research but it is also affecting industry and it will affect our lives. It is interesting to have this kind of broader meetings that are different from the kind of scientific conferences that I normally would attend.”

Bosch BCAI - Director of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems
Bosch BCAI - Chairman of the Board of Management of the Bosch Group

Volkmar Denner

Chairman of the Board of Management of the Bosch Group

Quote:

“Ten years from now, scarcely any Bosch product will be conceivable without artificial intelligence. It will either possess that intelligence itself, or AI will have played a key role in its development or manufacture.”

Bosch BCAI - Chairman of the Board of Management of the Bosch Group
Bosch BCAI - Head of Marketing and Communications at the Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence

Christoph Röscher

Head of Marketing and Communications at the Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence

Quote

“Artificial intelligence is the technology that will completely change our work and our lives in the future. With the first AI conference, we are creating a link between research in science and industry to enhance Germany as a business location. The BCAI and AI conference show that it is possible to combine research at an internationally outstanding level with direct practical relevance even in established industrial companies.”
